How to Remove a Bank Account From Zerodha?

Imagine trying to send money to your friend, but it ends up in your old, unused bank account. Or worse, your refund from Zerodha goes to an account you don’t even use anymore. Frustrating, right? If you're using Zerodha and want to: remove an old or unused bank account, unlink a secondary bank account you don’t need, or change your main bank account for smoother fund transfers. Then here we will discuss how to remove a bank account from Zerodha platform, as it's like switching from an old SIM card to a new one, just a few steps, and you’re done.

Why Would You Want to Remove a Bank Account from Zerodha?

Before we jump into how to remove a bank account, let’s first understand why you might want to do it. Sometimes, keeping an old or unused bank account linked to your Zerodha profile can create problems, just like keeping your old delivery address saved on Swiggy or Zomato. Your food (or in this case, your money) might end up going to the wrong place. Here are some very common reasons Indian users face:

  • You changed your bank. For example, you closed your HDFC account and now use SBI for trading.
  • The bank account is inactive. For example, you added your Axis account as a backup earlier, but you never use it now.
  • Transaction issues. For example, your old bank has NEFT/UPI issues, and funds aren’t getting transferred properly.
  • The refund went to the wrong bank. For example, Zerodha sent a refund to your secondary bank account by mistake.

Types of Bank Accounts in Zerodha

Before you start clicking around to remove your bank account from Zerodha, take a quick pause. You should first understand what kind of bank account you're dealing with, because not all of them can be removed with just one click.

Zerodha allows two types of bank accounts, and each has a specific role (kind of like how you have a main phone and a backup one). Removing the wrong one or doing it the wrong way can mess up your fund transfers or refunds. Here are two types of accounts:

  • Primary Bank: This is your main bank account. It’s used for adding money to your Zerodha account and withdrawing profits. You can remove it, but only after adding another bank account as the new primary.
  • Secondary Bank: This is a backup account, used mainly if refunds fail in the primary bank. Zerodha might send money here. You can remove it, and it’s super easy to remove online.

Let's take an example, let's say:

  • Your Primary Bank is ICICI Bank, where you deposit and withdraw funds.
  • Your Secondary Bank is an old Axis Bank account you don’t use anymore.

If you want to remove Axis Bank, that’s simple. But if you want to change from ICICI to SBI as your primary bank, you’ll need to submit documents.

Imagine like your mobile SIM cards:

  • The primary bank is the main SIM you use daily.
  • A secondary bank is like a backup SIM you rarely check.

You can throw out the backup easily, but changing the main one takes a few more steps.

Important Things to Know Before Removing a Bank Account

Before you try removing any bank account from Zerodha, keep these key points in mind. Skipping any of these can delay the process or create problems while adding or withdrawing your money.

  • You can’t remove all your bank accounts: Zerodha needs at least one active bank account linked to your profile at all times. No bank = no trading.

  • KYC update is needed if you're changing your primary bank: Changing your main (primary) bank is not just a button click. Zerodha will ask for documents to confirm it’s really you.

  • You can’t remove your only primary bank account directly: First, you’ll need to add a new bank, and only then can you remove the old one. It’s like changing your only SIM card; you must insert the new one first.

  • It usually takes 24 to 72 working hours to process: Zerodha isn’t lightning-fast here. It might take 1 to 3 working days, especially if documents are involved.
